  New product development engineer

  The role required me to work on new technologies with both internal and external customers to develop semiconductor manufacturing equipment. I worked on a variety of projects, which included design engineering, computer programming, sourcing supplies and contractors, and managing laboratory based gas mixing experiments. One of my major projects required me to program in ladder logic and VB.net to create an integrated PLC and touch screen system, which controls a revolutionary new product. I took a leading role in communicating with potential customers and surveying possible sites. I organised the installation of the first system into the research facility of a major customer.   The role required me to work with a variety of customers within the nuclear sector including several large Sellafield site based companies. I work closely with customers to help turn their problems to ideas and then to items manufactured in the onsite workshop. This requires ability to research, to sketch designs (both by hand and with CAD software), source materials, and complete quality packages. Additional duties include; calibrating and registering all mechanical equipment on site, administering the drawing registry, producing quotes and managing technicians. Show less

  The role required me to work with engineers from other disciplines to turn conceptual ideas into design solutions; this included creating mechanical flow diagrams, modelling parts and assemblies in design packages (such as Inventor and AutoCad), producing scoping calculations, researching existing solutions and relevant standards. I took part in bid proposals, design reviews, and producing risk registers.   My work focuses on asset care of two different plants, I can be working on up to six projects at any one time, each with a value of up to 3 million GBP per annum. I work as the key interface between the client (plant) and the supplier (design house or equipment supplier). On a number of tasks I have been the lead engineer working directly with the project manager. I am responsible for assisting in creation of the programme and reporting against it on a monthly basis. I produce sketches of working areas and produce equipment specifications. I conduct research to find equipment suitable for specific tasks and produce the documentation required for the procurement department. I produce “Invitation to tender” packages, undertake technical assessments of tender returns and manage the contractors during the design and construction phase. I am responsible for answering technical queries in conjunction with Sellafield Responsible Engineers and Design Authorities both during tender and implementation phases.In conjunction with managing design contractors I am responsible for the production of technical documentation including Method Statements, Plant Modification Proposals (PMPs), Risk Assessments and other documentation required, to allow the work to be undertaken by plant. I am then required to present and discuss the project plans with plant representatives in both formal and informal settings in order to obtain plant "buy-in". Show less
