      Assitant Manager

After starting as a trainee I peformed various roles in a sports & leisure centre including personal fitness trainer and Assistant Manager.

    • Scottish Fire and Rescue Service

      Nov 2000 - Jun 2015

I was responsible for day to day managment of a fire station. I would plan, deliver and review ongoing training for firefighters. This was often based on creating emergency scenarios for firefighters to practice responding to such as chemical attacks, water rescues, working at height incidents and fires.I was also responsible for the team in responding to emergency incidents. This involved briefing the crew about the potential incident. On the scene my role inlcluded:~to gather knowledge and information ~create a plan to respond to the emergency or incident~assign tasks to indivdual firefighters ~preventing harm to the public and the crew of firefighters~protect propertyThroughout any incident I remained focused and alert to any change to the risks by performing dynamic risk assesments and taking any necessary actions and / or decisons. That included ongoing communications with the control room and any incident commanders. That often required contemparaneous reporting of emerging or improving situations which also formed crucial evidence for lessons learned or for statutory bodies to use. Show less I had a 2 year secondment to this role which involved the project management of a community safety centre.I was successfull in delivering interventions which: ~reduced the incidence of wilfull fire raising in the local area~reduced the number of malicious fire alarms~increased fire safety awareness~increased road safety awareness, especially with target group of 15-18 year oldsI adapted and delivered a variety of training interventions for the delivery of fire safety and road safety to various stakeholders. This inlcuded using powerpoint, live demonstrations, simulations and experiential workshops. Show less Following a four year qualificaion period I became a fully qualified firefighter. My role as a firefighter was by it's nature diverse. Firefighers can be called to any type of incident at any time. The way to be prepared for any type of safety crictical incident is continous training and development. This means that I developed a very extensive skills and knowledge base. In particular my focus was always on the safety aspect of each element. I always worked on the premise of understanding where safety risks may emerge from in order to be able to manage, mitigate or avoid them.Whilst a firefighter I took care to know:~how to operate every piece of kit ~proper care and maintenace of equpiment~learn local specfic topography~learn the local and surrouding environment~always being prepared for 'what if...'~always know and wear or use the Personal Protective Equipment appropriate to situationTwo parts of the role that I particularly enjoyed were training new recruits and carrying out community safety & engagement.
