During my junior year, I took the initiative to study abroad in Cape Town, South Africa where I volunteered at the Amy Foundation, a non-profit organization that fosters academic and extra-curricular growth for the youth of different townships such as Gugulethu. As an Aquarist at the Turtle Back Zoo, my role is to provide the maintenance and operation of vital life support systems. Much of my daily tasks include testing water samples of different exhibits to make sure the desired water quality parameters are consistently met, back washing filtration systems, troubleshooting any issues that may prevent proper filtration, and assisting in putting together new aquatic exhibits. Aquarist (provisional) - new york aquarium

As an aquarist for the Fish Team, I was responsible for not only the basic husbandry for aquatic fish and invertebrates but I was also accountable for weekly water quality tests and correcting any insufficient parameters. This position allowed me to grow as an animal keeper and also as a diver. I actively participated in weekly scuba and hookah dives to maintain aquatic habitats. I also received experience as a secondary trainer to two green moray eels and a porcupine puffer fish. Additionally, I became exposed to culturing programs for jellyfish and cuttlefish. This position allowed me to develop into a more skilled keeper and aquarist. Show less

This includes tasks such as cleaning habitats and holding areas, preparing animal diets under USDA standards, properly preparing and administering medications, and providing thorough and comprehensive record keeping. This position is allowing me to narrow in my skills as an aspiring marine mammal trainer. Show less
