Research at the UCLA/West Los Angeles VA Healthcare System investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying pancreatic diseases. This includes both pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer to identify potential molecular targets for disease treatment. Advanced the novel understanding of the key intracellular and extracellular signaling pathways that have been identified to mediate the inflammatory and anti-inflammatory response in the pancreas and provide hallmarks of acute pancreatitis. Investigated the involvement of the pancreatic enzymes themselves in the pathology and systemic inflammation of the pancreas during pancreatitis.Performed independent projects including mice handling, histological analysis, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and qPCR, Western Blotting, Genotyping, pancreas homogenization and blue sample preparation, fluorescent imaging, Gel Electrophoresis, trypsin assays, collecting pancreas and blood samples for various types of analysis such as immunoblot and quantitative analysis of H&E images, and data analysis/compartmentalization.Publications:Mareninova, O.A., Chang, A. Hospital volunteer

As a volunteer on both the early morning and late evening shifts, I quickly built a close rapport with the staff. At these times, the day and night teams switched and I assisted with gaps in staff communication and patient requests. During these shifts, I was a leader, ensuring patient safety by answering patient calls and providing them with any needed assistance while many of the staff were off the floor. I also connected calls to staff and maintained a clean workspace for the whole team. This experience allowed me to interact with patients in the unit for prolonged periods of time as I rounded patient rooms and conversed with them while ensuring their needs were met. Show less

Conducted a research project using two mouse models of pancreatitis to understand the pharmacologic activation of the master antioxidant transcription factor NRF2 and how its activation improves acinar cell mitochondrial biogenesis and reduces the severity of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic experimental pancreatitis.I presented my findings at the USC Health Sciences Campus in August and received the Lee Summer Research Fellowship Award.
