  During the attachment period I was able to learn from 5 sections of the HIV/R Laboratory (STI/SEROLOGY, IMMUNOLOGY, HEMATOLOGY, CELL SEPARATION, CHEMISTRY AND SAMPLE RECEPTION). While at the sections I got;• Trained on the reception and rejection procedures of samples brought in the laboratory.• Trained in separation of serum and plasma from whole blood samples.• Trained how to make a DBS (Dried Blood Spot), plasma separation and harvesting of PBMC (Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells) for cryopreservation from samples brought in the Cell Separation section for processing.• Trained on the operation of the FACs Calibur in the Haematology Section to conduct Flow Cytometry.• Trained on the loading of the Cepheid GeneXpert used in the testing for CT/NG (Chlamydia trachoma/ Neisseria gonorrhoea), Viral Load Assay and SARs-COV-2 (COVID-19) testing.• Trained to perform various HIV-ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assays) tests in the Serology Section using different kits e.g. BIORAD Kit.• Trained on the operation of the DxH520 used in the CBC (Complete Blood Count) in the Haematology Section.• Trained on the routine daily monitoring of Laboratory Equipment.• Trained on the preparation of various reagents used in the Laboratory.   LABORATORY TECHNICIAN INTERN

  My work as an intern is to help in the various sections of the laboratory. One section at a time over an allocated time frame. I am eager to learn from the experienced staff in the institution. A great team!By the end of the internship I want to be able to conduct all the tests in the laboratory without supervision. Not only that, but also, understand the principles behind the tests. I could list more objectives but in a nutshell, I want to learn more.
