      Founder & Executive Director

Puget Sound Community School is an independent school in Seattle for students in grades 6-12. With my wife, Melinda Shaw, and a dedicated group of entrepreneurial parents and students, I started the school in 1994 to create a model for a style of education that helps students build on their strengths and nurtures their intrinsic motivation. The basic premise of PSCS is that when students feel safe, secure and supportive, and aren't burdened to fulfill a slate of external requirements, their natural curiosity to learn and grow will carry them to unparalleled heights of self- and community-awareness. Accountability in Schools Interview KCTS TV May 2015 "We wanted to hear from the front lines of education, from the people who deal directly with the students and administer discipline every day. So we sat down and spoke with ten teachers and administrators from the greater Seattle region. The results were frank, open discussions about the realities of teaching in today’s classroom. Teachers share their perspectives on discipline techniques, the challenges they face and their hopes for the future."
