      The New Visions program is designed to give advanced high school seniors with a demonstrated interest in healthcare careers access to observe all hospital operations.My year-long experience involved shadowing doctors in all hospital departments, including surgery, cardiology, oncology, ophthalmology, and pathology.I gained a broad understanding of healthcare process through interaction with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers.

      Research Intern

      The Cardiac Arrhythmia Research Group I joined is focused on developing a high resolution computer model of the human heart, accurate at scales ranging from individual cells to the entire organ.My role on the team included developing C software to evaluate protein kinetics of cardiac cells. This helped to improve prediction of cardiac arrhythmia in patients with Long QT syndrome, and led to the discovery of a new target for antiarrhythmic drugs.

      As Vice President, I help lead the Smart Home student group to foster innovation and entrepreneurship on campus with hi-tech and sustainable technology projects.Representative projects I have lead student teams on include:-Development of a wireless motion detector for library study rooms, with online dashboard to allow students to quickly find available space.-Promoting water conservation and positive behavior modification with installation of faucet flow meters, which provide real-time feedback about water use.-Increasing Smart Home interactivity with mail delivery detection system, including wireless connection of solar powered mailbox sensing system and indoor notification system.       Lead an Engineering World Health team in the design, prototyping, and fabrication of a low-cost (<$10) electronic timer for use in x-ray film development.The timer adjusts film development time based on temperature of the chemical bath, automating the development process and improving the quality and diagnostic value of the films produced.

      This NIH-funded biomedical engineering clinical practicum focused on the identification of critical unmet needs through extensive clinical shadowing. The final needs will be used to improve the biomedical engineering curriculum with improved topics for senior design classes.During the needs finding process, I integrated provider, patient, and other stakeholder perspectives into itemized needs statements.
