Thesis Topic: Conducting Inks and Films via Intense Pulsed Light ProcessingThis research focuses on the investigation of formulating and large area solution deposition of inks followed by rapid intense pulsed light processing to create conductive films for next generation photovoltaic applications. Three different morphological systems and nanomaterials were studied: 1D (copper hydroxide nanowires), 2D (graphene oxide nanosheets), and 3D (cuprous oxide encapsulated by nickel oxide nanoparticles and copper nitrate hydroxide nanoparticles). Through inclusion of different materials and morphologies, nanoscale manipulations can lead to breakthroughs in advanced materials and additive manufacturing. The formulated inks are being investigated for optimized nanoarchitecture, scalable synthesis, deposition, and processing leading to a variety of high impact applications such as next generation photovoltaics, energy storage, flexible electronics, and touchscreens. Fundamental areas of research are nanoscale heat/energy transfer, oxide reduction mechanism/kinetics, organic molecule decomposition mechanism/kinetics, oxygen mass transfer, and mass transfer of the materials. Characterization of the material transformations utilizes X-Ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Fourier Transform IR Spectroscopy, Ultraviolet–Visible Spectroscopy, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Thermogravimetric Analysis, Raman Spectroscopy, Profilometry, and Four Point Probe techniques. Analysis of the characterization techniques depict the reduction and sintering transformations with chemical kinetics of interacting species and movement of oxygen.
