  Project Case Study

  I ran a small engineering business repairing damaged cars, respraying cars, rebuildingengines and carrying out electrical repairs to vehicles. I also carried out complete vehiclewiring on modern and vintage vehicles. In conjunction with this work I undertook stand-alone projects requiring design and manufacture of items of plant.Examples of my work has appeared in the media and on television.; I was approached to design an automatic potato weighing/bagging machine toautomatically weigh and bag 5, 7 or 14 lb. bags of potatoes, to be retailed in shops. Themachine had to be easily interchangeable between the three required weights.The complete design, manufacture, operational program, finishing, painting andcommissioning of the automatic weighing machine was carried out entirely by myself.The machine, when finished proved to be reliable, very user-friendly and of a standardthat the Head of Engineering at Queens University, Belfast, allowed himself to be quotedin the press at the time as saying that he had seldom seen engineering of that standard,in all his years of engineering and lecturing.
