    • City of Somerville

      Jan 2007 - Dec 2014
      Executive Director

East Somerville Main Streets is part of the national main streets movement, which believes that everyone deserves access to a vibrant neighborhood – a place that has a thriving local economy, is rich in character, and features inviting public spaces that make residents and visitors feel that they belong. *I served as the organization’s first executive director, brought on to build the organization's strategy and systems. I achieved this by fortifying the board of directors, building deep partnerships and leading a strategic planning process to focus the organization's efforts. Together this led to a 66% increase in revenue over 8 years and the launch of 15+ initiatives that engaged 30,000+ people. *To start a new community organization in a neighborhood with no history of collaboration on that level, I executed an immense public change management campaign, which built investment from residents, local government and businesses large and small. *In the role, I created and project managed complex public programs in partnership with diverse partners, including envisioning and leading “This Is East,” a 2-year, $100,000 grant-funded placemaking program, launching one of the city’s most successful Latinx street festivals, Carnaval @ SomerStreets, and partnering closely with the City of Somerville on projects such the design and delivery of the stakeholder process for the $8 million East Broadway streetscape redesign. My goal is to shift the affordable housing system to center people and communities rather than constraints.*I developed the Affordable Housing Design Leadership Institute, from an event into an award-winning national leadership development program, which included redesigning the program to center equity in content as well as delivery. The program was acknowledged as a HIVE 50 Top 5 Housing Innovator and an AIA Collaborative Achievement Award winner. *I lead cohort development for the $20 million Housing Affordability Breakthrough Challenge, supporting leading innovators in fulfilling and scaling their breakthrough ideas. Show less *I led the National Design Team’s communications and messaging strategy, increasing e-marketing reach 64% and launching an online resource center.*I developed strategy and built partnerships for local and national housing innovation convenings and programs, including the Boston-based Design for Equity conference and the City of Atlanta Domesticity Affordable Housing Design Competition.*I pursued and was awarded four rounds of program funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, through the highly competitive Grants for the Arts program.
