My research at NTU, Singapore was related to the Security Guards Search Problem also called as the Art Gallery Problem in Computational Geometry. The Art Gallery Problem is a classical mathematical problem, in computational geometry, to determine the minimum number of guards that are required or are sufficient to cover or see every point in the interior of an art gallery or a museum. An art gallery can be viewed as a polygon with or without holes with a total of n vertices; and the guards as points in polygon, or on vertex, or on the edge of the polygon.I developed a new, efficient, and a cost effective way (method) of solving the Art Gallery Problem. The method is named as the "Diagonalisation Method", as the method include the use of diagonals present in the polygon, to find the guards positions. I wrote six algorithms to solve the Art Gallery Problem for simple polygons, and polygons with holes; using the concepts like polygon shrinkage, voronoi diagram, dual tree, etc. These algorithms can be used in real life applications to find minimum number of security guards or scan locations (for cameras) to guard a particular room, hallway, art gallery, museum, or any finite area. These algorithms give very efficient and cost effective solutions. Show less
