      UNIQ Biochemistry Summer School

UNIQ is the University of Oxford's official summer school programme. I was offered one of the 40 places after a competitive application process with there being over 200 applicants. During my time there I obtained valuable experience of studying biochemistry at undergraduate level which helped me make a better informed subject choice when applying to university.

      Sept 2018 - Sept 2018
      Insight Programme

I had the chance to appreciate the wide ranging areas of pharmaceutical development and cutting edge biotechnological research carried out in this company. In the biocatalysis department I observed a wide range of lab work, from screening for the most efficient enzyme for optimising a step in a synthesis to identifying unknown products formed in a reaction. I gained an understanding of flow chemistry and the benefits of its development in syntheses, hence the need for further research. I learned of the importance of careful scale-up to industrial level in the process development department. The central role of analytical techniques was also made clear from the heavy use of many from NMR to UPLC to ICP-MS. The importance of GMP procedures became apparent for the development of pharmaceutical products being placed on the market in order to ensure adequate quality and safety. In Almac Discovery, I saw the integration of chemistry and biology in searching for APIs. The collaborative nature of science modelled by the many disciplines working together in the Almac family was inspiring. Show less

      Chemistry Expert

This involves writing detailed answers to learners' questions about advanced chemistry, encompassing content to university level. This involved a range of areas from organic mechanisms, to physical chemistry calculations to practical problems. I gained experience in using LaTeX to write answers requiring mathematical notation.

    • Hilltop Academy

      Aug 2020 - Sept 2021
      Tutor in Science and Maths

My role started with running UKMT maths challenges for small groups of children in the summer. I developed skills in planning, using time efficiently and engaging the attention of a group. I have gained a lot of experience in one-to-one learning with candidates for various 11+ and 13+ entrance exams in both science and maths. I see several children for multiple sessions each week and help to provide motivation and guide them in the areas which they find challenging. All the children require different learning approaches. The main aim is to ensure deep levels of understanding through critical thinking, while building confidence and strategy for exam success. Show less
