      Aircraft Technician

As an Aircraft Technician I was responsible for the repair and maintenance of all Army aircraft, from Apache Attack Helicopters to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV’s). I worked on all mechanical systems including hydraulics, pneumatics, transmissions, flying control, rotary wing, weapons, brakes, survival, fuel, mobile air conditioning and jet engine systems. Aircraft Technicians have the highest level of responsibility and are promoted rapidly to reflect our skillset. Day to day work includes carrying out routine preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis and subsequent corrective maintenance to ensure on-going serviceability. I had a high level of authorisations including the ability to assess and sign the aircraft fit for flight-tests and normal flying. My latest role in this was to manage an Aircraft Maintenance Team (AMT) of up to 20+ Aircraft and Avionics Technicians. I was accountable for planning, organising resources and maintenance of aircraft in support of training and global operations. It was my role to lead and deploy my AMT to all aviation units, when requested, to provide maintenance, exercise and operational support. All tasks conducted by my AMT were executed efficiently and within all time constraints. I ensured my team could deploy self-sufficient ensuring there was adequate tooling, fuels and lubricants, paperwork, ground servicing equipment, expense, IT, publications and spares for the task at hand. It was my duty to check that I had enough sufficiently qualified tradesmen with the correct engineering authorisations to carry out the maintenance activities. After completion of a task I was to compile a detailed report and submit it to my senior management for review. Amongst this it was important that I developed, trained and mentored junior technicians including compiling appraisal reports for senior management. Show less
