SKILLS AND TECHNIQUESLaboratory skills include general molecular biology (RNA/DNA handling and molecular cloning), sequencing-library construction, Illumina and Ion Torrent sequencing, in situ hybridization, various microscopy techniques. Invertebrate laboratory skills include cephalopod and gastropod neuronal microdissection, specializing in single-cell isolation and sequencing of octopus brain and arm cord neurons.Computational skills include genome/transcriptome data assembly (RSEM, Trinity), annotation, mapping (STAR, Tophat/Bowtie), quantification (Cufflinks, edgeR), expression analysis (DESeq, Partek), and data visualization (UCSC genome browser, COGE, IGV) and interpretation.Field skills include SCUBA diving (AAUS Scientific Diver/Notrox/Rescue Certified), plankton tows, boating skills (knots, net handling, navigation, comfort at sea for multi-week voyages) marine invertebrate identification (especially using a dissecting microscope in rough seas), cephalopod, gastropod, and echinoderm husbandry, and gross dissection. Aug 2011 - Dec 2018

I completed my PhD in Medical Sciences, with an emphasis in Neuroscience. My PhD research used interdisciplinary approaches (Next-gen Sequencing, bioinformatics, molecular cloning, and anatomical mapping) to localize expression of putative secretory molecules in Octopus brains. I identified over 140 distinct (and in most cases novel) secretory molecules in Octopus neuronal transcriptomes which appear to be expressed in unique (previously unreported) neuronal subtypes and glia-like cells. This exciting and challenging project has not only developed my computational, technical, and analytical skills, but has given me the opportunity to expand my problem-solving abilities. My work with cephalopods (non-model organisms) has broadened my perspective of the challenges that come with innovative experiments. I am confident working independently and as part of a team to overcome these unique challenges. In addition to my laboratory work, I have been part of a collaborative biodiversity initiative attempting to sequence and monitor extant organisms in the world's oceans. My role in the project was to collect, identify, and process (prepare sequencing libraries) plankton samples from around the world. This portion of my PhD research required me to report to marine stations or international ports and board a personal or research vessel for extended collection expeditions. These expeditions varied extensively with regard to vessel type/capacity, crew background, and duration, so each venture required me to quickly and seamlessly integrate into a new working environment. I always enjoyed working with new people on these expeditions and each venture was incredibly successful. Finally, I have had many opportunities to teach and mentor younger students. I have enjoyed being involved in marine research outreach courses for K-12 students, as well as working intensively with one to three individual undergraduate student for summer internships.
