  During my laboratory exercise at Department of Biochemistry I had the opportunity to observeand execute techniques used in basic research. The current research objectives that theLaboratory researches are the effects of HIF-1 and 2 factors in cellular metabolism andbehavior under hypoxia. I was trained in the techniques of gel electrophoresis, western blotand also in the preparation and execution of cell culture and helped with the transformationof cells using vectors. I got the opportunity to extract DNA from cells and then usingtechniques of Genetic Engineering insert it in cancer cells. Furthermore, I have learned howimmunofluorescence and immunoprecipitation were done and then observed thetransformed cells in a fluorescence microscope. Another crucial fact during my exercisewere the weekly seminars where every member of the laboratory from MSc students toprofessors was presenting their current progress in their research subject, and through theseseminars I was able to see how research results are organized and presented in a properscientific manner and was informed about current advancements in the Laboratory's researchfield. To conclude, it was an utterly rewarding experience and convinced me that I must getinvolved in research since it is such a fascinating and rewarding at the same time activity. Show less
