  • Experience

    • AT&T

      Jan 1985 - Jan 1996
      Software Engineer/Architect

Company was originally called APT (AT&T and Philips Telecommunications), later changed to Lucent Technologies. First job: started as software engineer (Unix/C) developing basic call handling functions and subscriber features like Calling Number Display for the 5ESS Public Switching system. Later architect role for the development of 5ESS network management (ISO OSI protocols, TMN). International projects with AT&T Bell Labs USA. During 1994-1996 worked in more pure R&D in the Forward Looking Work department in Huizen. Main project there was working as architect/developer on the Platinum Platform and its follow-up MESH: a broadband ISDN network based on ATM switching technology, with multimedia applications like video conferencing. This project was a unique cooperation with a.o. Deutsche Telecom, TRC (later TI, Telematica Institute), CTIT (Twente University) and AT&T Bell Labs. It was a great succes as the picture shows. Though later The Internet came along...I feel I was at the right place at the right time, meeting the right people. I owe much if not everything in Software Development from my time at AT&T/Lucent: Learned all about Object Oriented Design, C++, Design Patterns from the great @coplien there. But also working with Unix (Shell, C, Emacs, AWK etc) daily using a distributed version control system (CMS,RCS,CVS), working in globally dispersed teams, made later transition to Linux/Mac and even GitHub natural. • Geonovum

      Apr 2014 - Jan 2018
Architect/developer Sensor Web for INSPIRE and EU Air Quality Directives (Contracting)

(Contractor via Just Objects B.V.) Partner project with a.o. RIVM, 52North, IRCEL - CELINE (B) in the domain of Sensor Web. Main goal is to develop solutions for providing sensor data compliant with INSPIRE and EU Air Quality Directives (AQ IPR). My responsibility is to build a prototype platform, "SOSPilot". This platform harvests raw AQ measurements from Dutch AQ stations via RIVM and transforms (ETL) this data into various OGC OWS services: WMS-Time/WFS and in particular Sensor Observation Service. In addition several (web)-clients and viewers are developed to visualize all time-series data from both The Netherlands and partner countries like Belgium. Tools: Stetl, PostGIS, GeoServer, Heron Mapping Client and 52North SWE suite. And since 2015 also for the Nijmegen Smart Emission Project: FIWARE, Python Flask and Leaflet.See more on http://sensors.geonovum.nl and http://smartemission.nl Show less

      Open Source Geospatial Professional (contracting)

Architect and executing migrator for the move of the entire OpenGIS IT-infrastructure from the former RVOB computing center in Apeldoorn to the RVB Shared Service Center using OTAP near The Hague. This involves about seven Ubuntu Virtual Machines with many of the common OpenGIS components like PostGIS, GeoServer, MapProxy, GDAL/OGR etc and viewer components like OpenLayers and Heron. One of the innovations I brought in this project is to bundle and maintain all custom components, configurations, scripts and even some data as Debian packages all orchestrated/deployed using Puppet on a Cloud of Ubuntu VMs within the SSC plus a Python Flask-based webapp, the OpenGIS Dashboard, to build/deploy all packages over the entire OTAP street.. Dec 2020 - Feb 2022
Expert at European Commission (EC) - Joint Research Center (JRC)

With a pool of other EC-JRC experts working towards the final report: "Emerging approaches for data-driven innovation in Europe", link: https://publications.jrc.ec.europa.eu/repository/handle/JRC127730My contribution/chapter was on lightweight geospatial APIs and deployment automation using "GitOps". See the above PDF publication. As per the abstract:"Europe’s digital transformation of the economy and society is framed by the European strategy for data through the establishment of a common European data space based on domain-specific data spaces in strategic sectors such as environment, agriculture, industry, health and transportation. Acknowledging the key role that emerging technologies and innovative approaches for data sharing and use can play to make European data spaces a reality, this document presents a set of experiments that explore emerging technologies and tools for data-driven innovation, and also deepen in the socio-technical factors and forces that occur in data-driven innovation. Experimental results shed some light in terms of lessons learned and practical recommendations towards the establishment of European data spaces." Show less
