  From my philosophy of advising (there are 2 more pages where this came from): The University of Washington exists to preserve, advance, and disseminate knowledge. As an advisor I function in all 3 of those roles, and perhaps am one of the few places where all three exist simultaneously and not in competition with one another. I am the institutional memory for the UW by maintaining accurate records about a student’s progress towards their degree and the policies and procedures that might impact their long-term goals. I advance knowledge by creating new ways to impact student’s success, their ability to connect with new academic opportunities, discover new ways to interpret information, and synthesize that information. I disseminate knowledge by working with my colleagues and students to make sure the most accurate, robust, and relevant information makes it to the students and faculty. I make a difference in people’s lives by moving comfortably between topics that are academic, work-related, and personal, in hopes of drawing connections between all parts of their life. Show less

  Director of Academic Services

  The Academic Services Director has delegated authority of the Vice Chair for Academic Services to administer the student advising and academic services unit and to supervise staff. The position collaborates with faculty to design and run student development programs, to facilitate program review and accreditation, and to design and implement curricular and program changes. The Director is a member of the Chair's executive committee and the department’s student affairs committee.
