I am responsible for teaching four academic courses yearly for students enrolled in the UROC year-round and summer-only undergraduate research programs. These courses focus on topics ranging from research mentor selection, research report writing, academic communication, graduate/professional school application preparation, and navigating the higher education environment as a continuing student. I am also still the Program Manager for the ASEMS STARS research program, and I have now absorbed the administration of the UROC-PREP program, too. In this role, in addition to my responsibilities as a lead instructor of the program's academic curriculum, I enroll students in courses each semester and support recruitment events for year-round and summer-only research programs. I also hire and supervise four graduate teaching assistants and two graduate student graders. Show less I have the honor of serving as the Program Manager of the Arizona Science, Engineering, and Math Scholars' Scholar Training Academic for Research in STEM (ASEMS STARS). ASEMS is a wrap-around student support and academic retention organization aimed at supporting students who have underrepresented identities in the context of higher education, including: students from low income backgrounds, students who are the first in their family to finish a four-year degree, students with disabilities, students who transfer from a community college, and students who are veterans. My role specifically provides holistic support to students who are enrolled in a math or science degree program by advocating for them in the face of academic or personal adversity, connecting them to resources at low or no cost within and outside of the university, coaching them on best practices for academic success in undergraduate, and assisting them with preparing applications for graduate or professional school or the workforce. I also oversee the administration and management of the ASEMS STARS grant, which is a four-year, $1.3 million award from the generosity of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. I manage the grant budget, handle supplies purchasing and student travel arrangements, disperse living and housing stipends to students, write both funder and internal reports on grant activities, and maintain a relationship with our sponsors. This position has allowed me to merge my passion for supporting student success and retention with my aptitude for navigating the internal and external processes for managing a large, multi-year grant. Show less I support two grant-funded undergraduate research programs aimed at increasing access to authentic research opportunities, particularly for students with identities that are underrepresented in higher education. This program, the Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) program, involves supporting faculty as they build interdisciplinary research teams with a scaffolded leadership approach. VIP teams are intended to be multi-year projects that allow for undergraduate students of all academic and personal backgrounds to gain entry-level research experience and stay with the project long enough to rise up in the leadership ranks, which allows them to grow into mentorship experience. In this role, I supported the financial management of this two-year, $200,000 award. I also assisted with data management and basic assessment of the program, and hiring and supervision of approximately 30 student researchers each academic year. I also helped to grow the number of VIP teams from approximately 20 when I started in May 2022 to nearly 40 by the time I left this role in July 2023. I managed the VIP website through the Drupal platform.
