  • Education

    • Private Supervision from the Scholars in Self Psychology for 30 years all over the Country

      1974 - 2015
Deepening learning as invited Founder of International Assoc of Psychoanalytic Self Psychology Research on Infancy, Child development, Contemporary Psychoanalysis Supervision with the Hightest National Scholars

Activities and Societies: Founder and Council Member of International Society of Psychoanalytic Self Psychology We learn about how we all have engrams, core beliefs, organizing patterns that act as templates ( or lenses in glasses) that organize how we filter the bombardment of experiences that happen to us.

    • I was the psychologist on the Adolescent Unit, Harvard Medical School, at Boston Children's Hospital

      1978 - 1982
Phin Clinical Psychology other "Degree" is Psychoanalyst from 2 Certified Psychoanalytic Ins studying contemporary psychoanalysis and MISSION to teach Empathic Listening to Upstate NY PhD in Clinical Psych and Trained in Psychoanalysis in two Certified Institutes

Activities and Societies: I feel my mission in life is to educate interested people on the perspective of EMPATHIC LISTENING as opposed to judging or having to be right. I use the motto:"Two people can each think something different and , they can EACH BE RIGHT." I use optical illusion pictures to illustrate this principle: "Look at this picture, is it the profile faces of two ladies looking at eachother, or is it a vase?Clearly both are correct. This is how I work with groups and couples and how I raise my child. We all see the world differently. Until we are in a self psychology treatment, we often are not aware that we are all looking through glasses with lenses ground by the real expereinces we had during our childhood. This causes us to magnify experiences that match our previous ones and minimize or maybe even not see experiences that do not match experiences we have lived before. Hence we confirm and re confirm what we have always been led to believe. And we can't help it.

    • Fellow at McLean Hospital Belmont Mass

      1974 - 1976
Research Fellow, post PhD Wrote dissertation on thougth disorder in different diagnostic groups The Highest Level of Empathic Understanding

Activities and Societies: The Analyst helps us see patterns. Slowly we question if these repetitive perceptions can all be so exactly the same. Slowly the analyst helps the patient experiment with tipping "the glasses" up and taking the chance of looking at what happened to them a different way. The patient's reality is always respected. Maybe the trauma that just occurred WAS the same as the hurt from earlier in life or maybe it was a little bit different. Maybe the person who hurt the patient had the same intent as the person who hurt the patient in childhood or maybe his or her motivation might have been a bit different. I have been studying, at Certified Psychoanalytic Institutes and in private supervision ( The Boston Psychoanalytic Institute and the Toronto Institute of Psychoanalysis) the evolution of the psychoanalytic perspective from the instinct model of Freud ( which saw man as struggling with civilizing inborn instincts of Sex And Aggression and was concerned with what the analyst determined were DEFENSES. In this model the analyst was the arbiter of reality and focused oncorrecting the patient and "maturing" the patient. I could not work in this confrontational way.Plus I could not see my patients in a one person model as having a DSM mental illness while the analyst was "healthy". I have studied since the early seventies the emerging branches of psychoanalysis which are termed Self Psychology or Relational Psychology. This approach involve deeply immersing oneself in the subjective feelings of the patient and non judgmentally helping them trace where their feelings came from, never denying their validity. This is a two person model where the analyst participates in a relationship with the patient and as a team theyjointly inquire into behaviors that may have been adaptive in childhood but may now be counterproductive. The patient is helped to explore with empathy and SELF EMPATHY his or her sense of self: both in states of stability and vulnerability. Symptoms are seen as indicators of internal pain and the attempt to manage this pain "as best as one can." You can read more about this on www.drcarolonline.com Show less

      Group Therapy in many areas

Recently I have received many touching requests to start offering some therapy groups. My Colleague of long ago at Harvard, David Spiegel MD,now at Stanford, found that women with breast cancer who participated in a breast cancer support group lived five years longer than the control group of those who did not. My personal opinion is that this is because bonding secretes the hormone oxytisin which we knoweven from companion animals, lengthens life. I am offering small groups up to 8, whom I will match individually beforehand. Obviously the fee will be far lower. So far I have had a request for a "shame group." Shame is the most difficult feeling to admit. I also want to start other groups on loss and griefand also on The Effect on the Sense of Self of having a chronic illness. There can be others depending on interest. I also want to re open a group I held for 15 years actually on clergy wellness and stress. There will be beverages and snacks, total "brinx trucks" confidentiality for I do not take any insurance or e records which can be traced in background checks. This will be a warm and supportive place. I will soon have a more complete description of my conscierge practice on my website www.drcarolonline.com. If you have interest of know someone who does please e mail me at C MunschauerPhd@aol.com. These will be low fee, determined by size of group, held during the daytime. I welcome your reaching out.
