    • Gresham's School Swimming Pool

      Mar 2007 - Sept 2008
      Lifeguard

Having completed my pool life-guard training, I regularly lifeguarded for a variety of different swimming groups from around the local area. Asides from the implicit First Aid and Lifesaving skills that I learnt, I developed a host of other skills from my training: the ability to function effectively and efficiently in an emergency; the ability to communicate clearly and calmly with distressed or frightened individuals or groups; teamwork and leadership skills; effectively adapting one's approach according to the disparate needs of members of the public with respect to age, physical and mental disability, language, and varying levels of proficiency. • National Youth Choirs of Great Britain

      Jan 2008 - Jan 2012
      Soprano sub-section leader

In this role I helped others with any musical or vocal issues and led regular rehearsals with a group of other singers. This developed my leadership confidence and gave me the opportunity to develop creative ways to teach and engage others.

    • Cromer Group Practice

      Jul 2008 - Dec 2008
      Receptionist

I acted as the first port of call for all enquiries coming into the Practice, dealing with patients face-to-face as well as by telephone. This developed my interpersonal skills, as well as giving me a great deal of experience operating in difficult situations in a calm manner, always ensuring complete confidentiality and, at times, successfully diverting aggression. I also provided administrative assistance to other members of the practice, including the practice manager and the medical staff. I learnt to work efficiently and effectively in a high-pressure and constantly changing environment where mistakes are simply unacceptable. Show less

    • Wiveton Hall Farm Cafe

      Apr 2009 - Sept 2009
      Front of House

This job, whilst being an enormous amount of fun, gave me the opportunity to develop my interpersonal skills, ensuring the highest levels of customer satisfaction even when the premises were extraordinarily over-subscribed and the team was understaffed. At a time when the business was still in the very early stages of its development, I had the opportunity to constructively offer my opinions and advice, as well as gaining some managerial experience.

    • Jesus College, Cambridge

      Sept 2009 - Jul 2013
      Choral Scholar (Soprano)

Besides the usual weekly commitments of Evensong, the choir also engages in a range of other musical endeavours, from large scale projects (working with very high profile conductors such as Sir Mark Elder and Sir Roger Norrington) and tours (America, Germany and India being recent destinations) to outreach days with schools and choirs from around the country. Outside choir, I involved myself with many other projects and ensembles, taking principle roles in the University Opera Society to smaller scale one-off projects and solo recitals, all organised exclusively by students. • Cambridge University Students' Union

      Jul 2011 - Jul 2012
      Coordinator

In my role as the Coordinator, I have a wide and varied range of responsibilities that require a very broad and refined base of professional skills. I write and oversee the company's budget (turnover ~£0.5m), approving all transactions and presenting frequent financial reports and recommendations to both the Trustees and the Union's Council. I also negotiate and secure the contracts that make up the largest proportion of the company's external income. Another area of my responsibilities is the line-management of the Union's staff, monitoring progress and overseeing recruitment, supported by the General Manager. A major event in my annual calendar is the organisation and running of the University's Societies' Fair, which is held in the city centre and attended by around 15,000 students each year. Other responsibilities include sitting on the Board of Directors for the student newspaper (The Cambridge Student) and acting as an advisor on legal and administrative issues; sitting on a variety of Committees throughout the University as a Student Representative; supporting the other officers in their campaigns by doing background research, giving legal and financial advice, and ensuring the policy set by the CUSU Council is followed. I also oversee IT and website management, as well as managing the many services (from reprographics to equipment rental) that CUSU offers its students. For a full job description: http://www.cusu.cam.ac.uk/elections/2012/JobDescriptions/JobDesc-Coordinator.pdf Show less

    • Department of Nutrition, Colombo, Sri Lanka

      Jan 2014 - Feb 2014

    • Opportunity Africa Charity

      Aug 2014 - Dec 2015
      Programme Manager, Uganda

I worked with a range of projects in small rural communities in Masaka district, southern Uganda, including a micro-finance programme and community bank. I also worked on developing sustainable profit-generating initiatives at schools and a community centre, including piggery, poultry and coffee-growing projects, to support the provision of scholarship funds for students from poorer backgrounds to access good quality education. I worked with a women's group to provide training in crafts and other skills, and facilitate access to regional markets for the selling of local goods produced by them. In partnership with community leaders, I worked towards the initiation of community-led adult education courses, covering literacy, numeracy, basic business skills and agricultural training. I built a network across the country with the aim of sharing experience and best practice for small ventures in regional communities. Excellent levels of communication, coordination, negotiation and patience were vital in this role, as well as building a thorough understanding of local social and business norms, and knowledge of regional agricultural practices and trade. Since I was working independently without the support of a team, it was crucial to develop strong relationships and trust with proactive members of the communities, and to learn from their experience and understanding of the needs and idiosyncrasies of their locality to ensure the ongoing efficacy and self-sustainability of all initiatives.
