      Dec 2021 - Jan 2022
      Winter Research Intern

Guided by: Dr Ramesh Kannan, Geotechnical Engineering, Dept. of Civil Engineering This was a research internship based internship for a duration of 1 month. It was based on the understanding of the particle migration phenomenon through porous media using different water-based drilling fluids. In the process of particle migration, the drilling fluid composed of bentonite and water is allowed to flow through a packed structure of sand grains with a fixed relative density and void structure. The drilling fluid of various concentrations was used and the particle motion was analysed using a high definition DSLR camera. The process of particle migration is a complex process and is dependent on a lot of parameters. These parameters include the packing structure of the sand, compositional features of the fluid, permeability and filtration characteristics of the sand structure and viscosity of the fluid. This filtration model can be used for understanding various concepts in the oil and gas field including,1. Estimation of the porosity2. Filtration Characteristics3. Pore Clogging in Shale Formations4. Cementation characteristics of the formation5. Borehole Cleaning Characteristics of the drilling fluid Show less
