For the better portion of three years I was the program coordinator for Vanguardia Afirmativa de los Latinas/os Unidos (VALU), and after-school program at DeKalb High School. I started this journey because I felt called to help young Latina/o youth realize their potential while aiming to continue their education. I establish a number of programs with VALU such as college shadowing, college campus visits, trips to the state capital, fundraisers, little free libraries, and cultural events. I planned and facilitated culturally relevant lesson plans and sponsored a team of students to participate in three cultural scholastic bowl competitions. One of the most sustainable programs was the college student led mentor program which offered tutoring and mentorship to the high school students. I trained and held an appreciation ceremony for our tutors while maintaining a reliable flow of mentors/tutors for each general VALU meeting. Although our budget was nominal, I always made sure to work with a team of volunteers who helped VALU grow and be a robust, safe, and fun environment for our students. After coordinating the school's meals, transportation, and speakers while on campus, I also served as their tour guide. During the tour my primary role was to ensure the students safety and the groups overall satisfaction with their stay on campus. I served over one hundred high schools during my time as the student outreach coordinator, which allowed me to build relationships with our clientele to help promote Northern Illinois University. After every visit, I collected and analyzed the post-visit evaluations in order to improve and learn more about the students. Show less

Program coordinator for the office of intercultural relations

While the program coordinator I spent most of my time, facilitating, organizing, planning, and setting up clear communication with campus stakeholders. I managed the office's social media account to promote upcoming events and interact with community partners. I contracted vendors, speakers, and community businesses for student and community events while working strategically with office budget. As I maintained the signature office events, such as Soup and Stories and Global Fest, I also coordinated for Globalpalooza, which culminated in contracting professional bands to provide a campus concert for students. Outside of coordinating, I also served as adviser for student organizations. During my time, I also established a Latino Male Retention Group. Show less
