      Oikopleura dioica belongs to tunicates which are the closest living relatives of vertebrates (Delsuc et al., Nature, 2006) and their genome have evolved rapidly. O. dioica’s genome is very compact and when 45% of human genome is comprised of transposable elements, its newly sequenced genome is characterized by major losses of ancient transposons families. Newly acquired retrotransposons appeared to have conserved intact or almost intact sequences. The structure of so called Tor (Ty3-gypsy Retrotransposons Oikopleura) elements is comparable to those of all retroviruses, but they produce their envelope protein from an internal promoter and not from their LTRs. Several Tor elements are highly expressed in specific tissues of the embryo. The aim of my project was to verify if the proximity of Tor elements with genes up-regulated during embryogenesis could be the reason of their tissue-specific expression. Show less
