It provides a representation of NISs centered on the role of public policies and the coordination between policy actors. Then it clarifies the possible feedback effects between national institutions and sectoral conditions and the relevance of their integrated effects on countries’ patterns of technological activities. The dissertation confirms the prior literature findings and proposes a typology of countries according to the persistence of the technological profiles. Our results suggest a more nuanced view of convergence processes of national technological specializations which shows significant sector-specific features. Furthermore the dissertation focuses on a case study of France to bring empirical evidence on the relationships between the evolution of NISs and the dynamics of countries’ technological specializations.
