      In addition to courses about computer Networks and telecommunication, I gain not only the mathematical knowledge for doing signal processing and machine learning, but also the fundamental programming skills such as C/C++ and VB, which enabled me to quickly pick up other programming languages such as Python, C#, Java for my later projects.

      My PhD topic was in the intersection of cognitive psychology, information retrieval, computer vision and Interface design. I managed to integrate theories and my experiment findings from these very different fields to design a user memory-friendly information management system for a novel data collection of user’s daily life.

      With a emphasis on psychological research method, I learned to build hypotheses based on literature, design, conduct and analysis experiments, and practiced qualitative and quantitative methods on different subjects, including consumer psychology, cognitive psychology and clinical psychology. Starting from scratch, I managed to catch up with other students who had completed a psychology degree, and I achieved good scores.

      I worked as a freelancer to help small businesses digitize their work process and improve their websites.-- Developed pipelines for automatically processing Data from multiple databases (such as MS Access) to generate a styled Excel Report (using SQL and VBA).-- For a traditional manufacturer, I designed and developed an enterprise software, which enabled multiple departments to communicate their data digitally. -- Updated the front-end for 2 small companies’ marketing websites, and improved SEO for one company, which brought noticeably increase of clients in the next month.       Broadly researched topics in: human-computer interaction (HCI), information retrieval, human memory (cognitive psychology), computer vision and lifelogging. I managed to synthesize theories and my research findings from these fields, to guide the design of a system to search and using personal multi-media big data: life-logs. I published 10+ peer-reviewed works and presented at some top-tier conferences such as SIGIR, and successfully received extra funding for my projectI gained extensive insights into user requirements and behavior patterns, by creatively combining results from various studies and including interviews, diary studies, questionnaires, as well as remote and local user experiments.       I worked as an HCI researcher in a Bayesian statistical machine learning group, and was responsible for bridging the gap between the users, new machine learning algorithms, existing application fields (such as information retrieval, personal information management, information visualization, quantified-self, and recommender systems). I managed to turn new machine learning algorithms into user-friendly applications, and played an important role in the full life circle of some products, including:— UX design, including interactive data visualizations— Planned and conducted formative and summative user studies, and distilled insights from qualitative (e.g., interviews, videos) and quantitative data (e.g., activity logs)— Developed front-end of web apps, and wrote APIs in Java, Python at the backend— Prepared work package reports for project meetings and present to commercial sponsors— Supervised BSc. students on their dissertation.
