Following my time on the Acute unit, for an additional two years, I was the primary therapist on a residential treatment unit of 10 adolescent males. I conducted individual, family, and group therapy as well as assisted administration with unit programming and milieu management. As my patients discharged from residential treatment, I worked concurrently in the partial hospitalization program conducting individual and family therapy. PHP served as a step down from residential and facilitated a smoother transition to weekly outpatient therapy. Patient ages ranged from 7 - 17 and residential treatment stays ranged from approximately 3-6 months treating a wide variety of mood disorders, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, and aggression. Duties included basic nursing skills of taking vital signs and EKG's, resolving crises and when necessary, utilizing Handle With Care Physical Interventions. I processed with patients using basic and advanced counseling skills, assisted with treatment and discharge planning, and conducted psycho-educational groups such as coping skills, medication management, and substance abuse treatment.Additionally, I served as a PRN Therapist for the acute care center. I provided clinical services to both children and adolescent populations including clinical process groups, discharge safety planning, individual therapy and family therapy. Patient diagnoses on the acute unit included mood disorders, severe depression, and psychoses. I worked closely with the facility program director to re-organize the Acute care program including creating detailed progress notes, a therapeutic point system, and a unit schedule that focuses on providing more therapeutic activities and interventions in connection with Joint Commission Standards of Patient Care for Virginia. Treatment consisted primarily of cognitive behavioral interventions, although individual therapy focused on Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills training. In addition, I completed assessments to aid identifying treatment needs (STABLE-2007) as well as protective factors (SAPROF-SO). My evaluation rotation involved the creation of a Chapter 980.07 evaluation shadow report involving extensive record review and culminating in an all-day mock trial testimony consistent with an experience of a licensed chapter 980 evaluator.
