      Student advisor

Student Advisor for TPAUD's teen group that meets at Trumbull High School every month to advise the group as to how to improve their outreach programs to the high schoolers and what new statistics to look for in reckless behavior in teens today. The group would come up wth new ways to prevent destructive behavior, raise awareness to their peers about issues such as drinking and driving, drugs, and smoking to name a few. Students were involved in helping with the Mock Car Crash at Trumbull High School, and students are encouraged to attend the town town wide coalition meetings where the students get a chance to voice their opinion in a meeting setting with town leaders. Participating encourages skills such as leadership, model behavior, and prevention work with peers and town leaders. This group allows the voice of the teenager to be heard about issues that try to distract them during their high school experience and how to prevent them. Show less

      Student nurse

First freshman in the university to achieve a position as a student nurse on campus in the Health Services Department at Southern Connecticut State University, the on-campus clinic. This job has helped me transition well from the emergency first responder role into the clinical side of the medical field. Skills include: patient triage, primary assessments, drawing blood for lab work, starting IVs, intramuscular and intradermal injections, STD testing, rapid strep tests, pregnancy testing, vitals, patient interaction, working under nurse practitioners and a doctor, and urinalysis testing. Bridgeport Hospital’s Doctor Douglas Latham, EMS Manager Wesley Young and Director of Trauma Services Paul Possenti presented the award at their quarterly recognition ceremony. Due to Shirley and Paulina’s prompt recognition of the seriousness of the emergency and their subsequent treatment and intervention the patient was able to make a complete recovery.
