We work in space and around the world in laboratories and wind tunnels, on airfields, and in control rooms to explore some of lifeโ€™s fundamental mysteries.The job responsibilities I have fulfilled: ๐Ÿ‘‰ Conducted various experiments in the Biomolecular Microbiology Laboratory at NASAโ€™s Kennedy Space Center. ๐Ÿ‘‰ The research title was โ€œAdvanced Microbial Detection and Control Technology Development for Future Spacecraft.โ€ This study sought to identify methods and instrumentation for the rapid molecular detection, characterization, identification, and control of various microbial targets, such as Escherichia coli 0157:H7, Cryptosporidium, Pseudomonas spp., Serratia marcescens, and Salmonella. ๐Ÿ‘‰ The research project focused on detecting and identifying microorganisms in microgravity environments such as the ISS (International Space Station) via conventional applications on earth in that they may have certain disadvantages which are undesirable for the ISS (i.e., the requirement to culture potentially hazardous organisms before analysis). ๐Ÿ‘‰ The study's primary objective was to evaluate the potential use of various plug-and-play qRT-PCR and Real-Time amplification bioprocessing systems in a microgravity environment. qRT-PCR is a laboratory-based technique that permits reliable detection and quantification of a targeted DNA molecule. ๐Ÿ‘‰ All microbial methods and instruments under consideration were further evaluated based on simplified crew procedures, crew time, sustaining cost, reliability, accuracy, and upmass/down mass design for manned spacecraft and the ISS.
