    • University of St Andrews

  • Experience

    • British Geological Survey

      Oct 1974 - Mar 2010
      Principal Geologist

I retired in 2010 as a Principal Geologist with the British Geological Survey. In a 35 year career, I worked on UK mineral resources and environmental geology and was a survey geologist mapping rocks ranging from the Palaeozoic to Quaternary in the Midland Valley (especially in urban areas), South of Scotland and Northern England. I led teams working on the classification of superficial deposits and the development of the BGS stratigraphic framework for the Quaternary of Great Britain. Continuing research interests range from the Quaternary (including the Anthropocene) to Scotland's stone-built heritage and stone conservation working with the Scottish Geodiversity Forum and with the International Scientific Committee for Stone, a committee of ICOMOS. • Geoconservation Commission of the Geological Society

      Jan 2006 - Jan 2009
      Chair

Represented the British Geological Survey on the Geoconservation Commission, 1992-2009. The Commission responded to government consultations and advised on a range of geological conservation issues mainly in the UK. It organised several conferences including two on the built heritage: Quarrying and the Built Environment in Scotland (Edinburgh, 1997), and England's Heritage in Stone, (York, 2005).

    • Scottish Stone Liaison Group

      Jan 2008 - Jan 2012
      Board Member

The Scottish Stone Liaison Group (SSLG) was set up at the instigation of Historic Scotland in 1995 and was formally launched as a company on 22 May 2000 by Rhona Brankin MSP, Deputy Minister for Culture & Sport, to champion the Scottish Stone Industry with objectives to maintain Scotland's stone-built heritage and promote the use of indigenous stone for new build projects. From 1995 I represented the BGS on the SSLG and was first convener of one of its projects the Natural Stone Institute (NSI). Both the SSLG and NSI successfully raised awareness of the stone built heritage and highlighted issues of skills, materials and research requirements. The SSLG, with support from Historic Scotland, developed and managed several major projects including an assessment of slate resources in the West Highlands and Aberdeenshire, and a study of skills and materials requirements entitled 'Safeguarding Glasgow's Stone-built Heritage' (2006). The SSLG also published a guide for designers and constructors 'Natural Stone Masonry in Modern Scottish Construction' (2008) commissioned by the Scottish Government's Directorate for the Built Environment. Although the SSLG was wound up in 2012 much of its philosophy is now embodied in Historic Scotland's Skill's Strategy. Show less
