Title: DNS and LES simulation of Homogeneous Isotopic Turbulence.( Part of validating the course)The motive of the project was to understand the significance and effect of using DNS ( Direct Numerical Simulation) as well as LES (Large Eddy Simulation) to study homogeneous isotopic Turbulence. FORTRAN code developed by Prof. LAVAL (LMFL) was used to analyze the homogeneous isotropic turbulence using different forcing as well as grid resolution. The code was modified for the periodic saving of the statistics and to include the spectral eddy viscosity model. The different statistics were compared and studied including the evolution of these statistics with respect to time as well as wave number. Comparison was also made between the effectiveness as well as the computational costs of the two methods. Show less Title : FORTRAN simulation of turbulent Couette - Poiseuille flow using turbulent viscosity model. (Personal project)A Fortran code was developed to simulate turbulent Couette - Poiseuille flow profiles using the turbulent viscosity model. The numerical solution was obtained by finite volume discretization. The laminar profile was discretized on the mesh to obtain the turbulent viscosity which in turn was used to solve the linear equation. A Series of operations including but not limited to the Thomas algorithm was used. A tolerance was set to determine the convergence of the solution. A regular, as well as a stretched grid, was used and efficiency calulated. Show less

Title: Experimental characterization of a water droplet impinging on a wall. (M1 project)This 2.5-month-long project was done under the guidance of Prof. Francesco ROMANO & Prof. Antoine DAZIN at ARTS ET METIERS -ParisTech (ENSAM -Lille). The objective of this project was to study the dynamics of water droplets before and after impinging a wall/substrate. The project included the setting up of experimental setup as well as post-processing of the results. The experimental setup was made using existing aluminum profiles and Plexiglass was used as a wall. Two high-speed imaging CMOS PHANTOM cameras V 9.0 was used to capture the droplet dynamics as well as the thin water film interface. Over 100 GB of data was obtained which was later post-processed. A variety of post-processing operations were carried out like threshold, sharpening, noise reduction, and edge detection .A contour tracking algorithm was developed for droplets and the characteristics were studied extensively. The thresholds for secondary droplet formation, crown formation, etc., were studied. Show less

“Study of statistical properties of energy transport in a set of bending waves, understanding wave turbulence, thermodynamics.”During the course of this internship, experimental study of a thin, long elastic plate kept out of equilibrium in a regime of wave turbulence by external forcing was studied. To define “Temperature” or characteristic energy for such a system out of equilibrium was the main motive of study. Two methods proposed in the papers by Apffel et al and Miquel et al were quantified and compared in this study. Show less
