The Surfrider Foundation
Mar 2014 - Jan 2020San Diego Surfrider 2013 – PresentCoordinated policy for a grassroots non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of oceans, waves and beaches with a powerful activist network. Served on the Executive Board, setting annual actions and agendas for 7 committees with a focus on community outreach, activism, policy initiatives and volunteer retention. Partnered with the development manager to devise strategic business partnerships with local San Diego companies to secure increased donation volume (currently sustaining an average of $200K in annual donations). Strengthened brand awareness by planning outreach events, such as Surfrider’s Annual Art Gala, Ocean Beach Paddle For Clean Water, Tijuana Estuary Surf Competition, Kaboo Music Festival and booth events held throughout the year to drive new member acquisition, donation volume, and visibility and exposure.Mitigated regulatory risks by ensuring staff conformance to legal policy issues, actions, and litigation recommended by team. Reviewed issues, time and financial costs and determined impacts to ensure issue meets company mission, while pursuing litigation and advocacy. Administered the monthly budget and revenue stream sources to refocus efforts on zero profit erosion.Directly increased fundraising ability by negotiating terms and finances received with companies and events, including interfacing with Kaboo Music Festival to receive a portion of the event proceeds. Partnered with Coronado Brewing and Stone Brewery to receive proceeds from the percentage of each sale.Appointed to serve on the hiring committee to onboard and negotiate a contract for a new Development Manager and various non-volunteer roles to increase donations and ensure timely objective fulfillment. Show less The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit grassroots organization of over 50,000 activist and 90 chapters that protect the enjoyment of our oceans, waves and beaches. The Rise Above Plastics Committees mission is to reduce the impacts of plastics in the marine environment by raising awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution. Surfrider's R.A.P committee is advocating for a reduction of single-use plastics and the recycling of all plastics. As Volunteer Policy Coordinator I have worked with City Council Members, City Sub-Committees, environmental groups and local media to provide awareness of the environmental consequences of single-use plastics in our environment. I have assisted in developing ordinances and advocating for their successful passing in five cities. I co-founded the Surfrider Ocean Friendly Restaurant program that has successfully reduced the use of plastics in restaurants by working with local restaurant owners and managers to voluntarily change their business practice to reduce single-use plastics and provide an environmentally friendly approach. All programs and ordinances have resulted in significantly reducing plastic pollution. Show less
