    • Barings

      Sept 1995 - Aug 2005
      Global Head Technology Investment Management

In 1995, ING purchased Barings Bank for the nominal sum of £1 and assumed all of £1.3b Barings' liabilities, forming the subsidiary ING Barings. In 2001, ING sold the U.S.-based operations to ABN Amro for $275 million, and folded the rest of ING Barings into its European banking division. Gottlieb was involved in the aftermath of the unprecedented 1995 take-over of Barings PLC - chaired by CEO Aad Jacobs. Ernst August (Gottlieb) multidisciplinary project finance accountants & comptrollers, the chief actuary, the portfolio & risk management team, with incidental support of Mckinsey & Company, devised the checks & balances to restructure and integrate the global Barings operations, and optimize a multi-billion project finance portfolio with optimizing risk-weighted returns and shareholder value creation as ultimate objective. The technology hedge funds targeted an 18.5% pre-tax annualized yield - an Alpha return with risk premiums exceeding the Securities Market Line. In portfolio optimization, Gottlieb collaborated with Michael Vincent, a GE Capital veteran and direct report to Jack Welch. In working with peers across-industries, Gottlieb supported Martin Curley in establishing technology investment benchmarks for Intel's capital budgeting process. He also worked closely together with Deutsche Bank Securities, RBC Capital and American Express in developing best industry practice in Beta-adjusted portfolio management. Together with IBM, AIG and presently CIO of Aon, William Pieroni, Gottlieb explored the general insurance market to indemnify corporations against technology risk - a major obstacle for innovation & wealth creation. Gottlieb was a direct report to the Executive Committee, and greatly benefited from the inspiring leadership of Alexander Rinnooy Kan who was in charge of ING Global Asset Management, ING Asia and ING Group Technology at that point in time.
