Spent a week at a research and development center in Newcastle. We were shown around the site looking at the different departments working on fast-moving consumer goods, specifically detergent chemistry. We also saw how both upstream and downstream carry out research to produce new products to take to market. We also did group activities and other team building exercises.

Predominantly polymer chemistry but also saw what other departments are researching and how they carry out research. I also spent a significant amount of time in their pilot plant looking how they scale up processes from bench-top to pilot plant scale and then how the transition to full-scale production of polymers. Saw how they carry out mechanical testing of polymers to ensure they are fit for their designed role.

I shadowed an intern for a day seeing how chemical engineering is used directly in their projects and the transferable skills attained are applicable such as general engineering approaches to problems and project management. During this I also gained a deeper understanding of the petrochemical industry and the wider role of chemical engineering throughout the company from start to finish. I met with other interns from different fields and leaned how they work together. Spent a day at The International Centre for Business & Technology in Sunbury. We sat in talks from senior managers who talked about the outlook of BP and career progression and then we had talks from graduate students who talked about their day-to-day life and projects they were working on. We also took part in group activities and had a networking lunch. We had the opportunity to see how they train their engineers to be able to competently control an offshore and onshore facility.
