  The main part of my role was to provide operational training and advice to our local Biodiversity staff across England and Wales. I provided advice to Defra on the operational impact of proposed legislation, such as the Environmental Liability Directive. Other departments within the Environment Agency would consult me on what they needed to do to ensure their activities complied with nature conservation legislation. One big work area was to build an automated permit application screening tool for nature conservation protected sites and species, working closely alongside specialist data and GIS staff. This ultimately saved the Environment Agency £500k each year in manual screening of permits, sped up the permitting process for applicants by 3 weeks, and freed up local staff time to provide bespoke advice on the highest risk permits.
