  After working on the shop floor for 4 years as a customer assistant, I use the service skills gained there to now recruit, induct and train new colleagues into the business. I am responsible for the smooth instigation of new scheduler software designed to increase the efficiency of colleagues across the store. This requires tracking of tasks and deadlines that are necessary for the software to run.I also help run with the day to day management of the office, with wages and assist managers when required in various tasks.   Ecology Work Placement

  I have been giving ecological based feedback on planned applications and suggesting mitigations and conditions to improve or safe the environment and wildlife. I have created documents for other departments using information from databases and MapInfo on the location of the invasive non-native species Japanese knotweed. Hands on experience clearing invasive Himalayan balsam from waterways (see link below to my blog for more information on my time with Balsam).

  I help my local community by contributing to ideas and decisions regarding the Parish Plan, planning matters and providing facilitates at the Parish hall. From my time on the ecology team at the Nottinghamshire County Council I am able to provide ecological details and guidance on planning matters, including when best to prune trees outside of bird nesting season.

  Hill at the Heart Trainee

  I was based at Old Park Hill Nature Reserve and at offices at Dover Town Council. On the nature reserves I am learning countryside/grounds maintenance skills, such as constructing livestock fencing, grass mowing (brush-cutting), monitoring wildlife on the reserves and learning wildlife identification skills and livestock management and husbandry. From the reserve task days I am also learning emergency first aid, fire safety, risk assessment and group leadership skills. The office based tasks include assisting with public engagement and events, like organising bird box building events. These events often involve working with children and families, connecting them with the local wildlife. Show less

  Reviewing of ecological information submitted with planning applications Supporting the Ecological Advice Service delivered by Kent County Council, and the Kent Nature Partnership. I also run the social media account for Kent's Plan Bee, designing the content and resources. Working on the Old Chalk New Downs project to connect landowners and members of the public with their local chalk grasslands. Surveying for key indicators species for hedgerows and chalk grasslands. Updating social media and website content. Organising events, specifically the Walking Festival.
