The Healthy Body Healthy Mind Awards are a partnership initiative between NUS Scotland and Scottish Student Sport which aim to tackle the stigma that surrounds mental ill health and ensuring people know what to do if they are having concerns about their own or others’ mental health. To gain a Healthy Body Healthy Mind award institutions must run projects related to mental health throughout the year and help bring about practical changes on their campuses. These changes include improved sport and recreational programmes, better signposting to student services and external organisations that can provide support, and educating staff and students about good mental wellbeing through sports teams and fitness facilities. Vital aspects of this project are promoting healthy lifestyles and encouraging people to take care of their own mental wellbeing given the well documented links between exercise and mental health. The awards are judged by a different panel each year based on self evaluation reports submitted by each institution. In my role I have promoted healthy physical and mental wellbeing to all students at the University of Glasgow through various welfare projects and I am very proud to have led Glasgow University Sports Association to a five star NUS Healthy Body Healthy Mind award (one of only 3 institutions in Scotland) Show less

Clubs, which are the very lifeblood of sport, rely heavily on the volunteer support network and the many people that generously give their time to help others, to deliver events and provide opportunities.Launched by Scottish Student Sport in 2011, the Volunteer Champion Awards are designed to recognise institutions who actively promote sport and exercise as a means of engaging volunteers. Taking part in this awards scheme will help the institution develop its volunteering work into simple and positive areas which will have great benefits for both students and the institution as a whole.SSS is attempting to make volunteering more robust and entrenched within each College and University. SSS, with the support of sportscotland, would like to identify, recognize and support institutions with an award scheme so that they can be easily identified to others. This will help the institution collate their processes and will hopefully develop more joined up thinking with regards to volunteer development for the future. Show less
