      After a competitive application process, I was selected to attend the University of Oxford for their UNIQ Summer School Music Program. During the week, I explored the collection of historical instruments, received some taster lectures and wrote an essay on 'La Traviata' by Verdi.

      This role involved working in a small team to promote the Society App at the Durham University Freshers fair. During the event, I spoke to hundreds of students, both first years and society exec members, which improved my interpersonal skills and confidence.

      As a Durham Student Ambassador, I acted as a representative for the university. In my role, I assisted with the Open and Post-Offer Visit Days which involved communicating with hundreds of parents and prospective students, giving them an insight into life at Durham and directions around the city.       This arts administration role involved tasks such as budgeting, liaising with schools and performers, and compiling programme notes in order to ensure the English Music Festival ran smoothly. In May I travelled to Oxfordshire to help on the grounds of the festival, which was rewarding to see my administration work transformed into an enjoyable weekend.

      Orchestral mentorship scheme

      As the only clarinet player accepted onto the scheme, I was paired with the principal bass clarinettist of the Royal Opera House Orchestra to receive mentoring tailored to my individual needs whilst enhancing my skill sets, insight and training in the classical music field. I also had the opportunity to attend private rehearsals and performances. At the end of the scheme, I had a mock audition where I performed the first movement of Poulenc’s Clarinet Sonata and six orchestral excerpts, taken from The Nutcracker, Carmen, Sleeping Beauty, and Siegfried.       I played clarinet and alto saxophone in the pit band for National Youth Music Theatre’s production of Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along at Southwark Playhouse (Elephant) in London. I also performed in NYMT's Christmas Celebration Concert at St John's Smith Square, London.

      As a trainee Music Facilitator at SoundCastle, I help lead musical workshops for children in East London. I also completed training to be a First Aider for Mental Health (FAA Level 2 Award in First Aid for Mental Health). This programme provided training opportunities in music facilitation skills, regular support in developing creative enterprise skills, and one-to-one mentoring with industry professionals. Through the programme, I gained a deeper understanding of the community music sector, increased skills in reflective practice and music facilitation, and achieved an FAA Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health (RQF).

      -Nicky Thomas Media is a boutique PR and media relations partnership based in London, working for classical music clients, orchestras, opera companies, composers, charities, individual musicians and the classical music service industry.My role as Media Relations Officer involves: -Raising the UK and international profile of over 30 clients in the media, generating previews, features, interviews, reviews, and listings in classical music media.-Helping to plan long-term media strategies and deliver these as proposals to clients.-Writing press releases and sending them to journalists using Newzapp software.-Creating social media posts to share clients news, reviews, and upcoming events.-Extracting coverage from national and international newspapers to circulate to clients, whilst having an awareness of current headlines within the arts.-Using Microsoft and Google suites daily.
