The department draws on faculty and resources from around the College and University, including schools of medicine, nursing, theology, law, business, and public health. This course of study provides a liberal arts-based curriculum structure for students to learn more about and engage in discourse around the complex scientific and social problems involved in health, healthcare, and well-being. I tailored my curriculum to focus on the social, cultural, and political factors that influence health outcomes. I studied community wellbeing, health systems, bioethics, social determinants of health, and intersectional health inequities. Show less

      This summer program offered students the opportunity to join the emerging dialogue between the Tibetan Buddhist tradition of the Inner science of the mind and the Western tradition of the science of the external world. Participants in this program engaged in daily morning meditation, cultural excursions, healing rituals, and group research projects. Students had the opportunity to learn from some of the best teachers in the Western and Tibetan traditions, while actively engaging in dialogue… Show more This summer program offered students the opportunity to join the emerging dialogue between the Tibetan Buddhist tradition of the Inner science of the mind and the Western tradition of the science of the external world. Participants in this program engaged in daily morning meditation, cultural excursions, healing rituals, and group research projects. Students had the opportunity to learn from some of the best teachers in the Western and Tibetan traditions, while actively engaging in dialogue with Tibetan monks and nuns who have been studying neuroscience, biology, and physics in the month-long Emory-Tibet Science Initiative. The program took place half in Dharamsala, where a large part of the Tibetan community lives in India, and half in Karnataka, India, at Drepung Loseling Monastery. Show less

      The Office of Health Promotion engages students and campus partners to implement initiatives in order to cultivate a culture where students engage in positive, protective health and well-being behaviors. As a Sexual Health and Evaluation Intern, I supported several health education initiatives including:- Spearheading a social marketing campaign to educate students about the university PrEP clinic- Presenting a clinical provider workshop at Student Health Services about the stigma surrounding race and sexuality in HIV prevention (part of the workshop was used by Dr. Michael Huey to educate nearly 2,000 student health professionals at the 2017 American College Health Association Conference)- Assisting in redeveloping the curriculum for a sexual health education program called "Sexpert" to be more inclusive for people of all sexual orientations, which reached more than 100 students.- Evaluating the community health education programs and provided recommendations for improvement Show less

      My research project, conducted under the guidance of Dr. Carol Hogue, sought to answer the question of why education and income do not serve as social protectants for Black women and birthing parents. The project included:- Conducting original social epidemiology research - Analyzing data from the CDC’s Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System - Completing a comprehensive review of the literature around the social and political context of the perinatal crisis in the U.S. disproportionately impacting Black women and birthing parents- Independently designing and executing quantitative models that examine the effects of perceived discrimination on rates of accessing prenatal care among higher-income Black women and birthing parents Show less

      Part of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), FORHP has department-wide responsibility for analyzing the possible effects of policy on the 65 million residents of rural communities and provides grant funding at the state and local levels to increase access to high-quality health care. As a Fellow and Public Health Analyst, I contributed to projects including: - Writing a white paper and co-founding a workgroup on addressing rural LGBTQ+ health and social challenges- Managing a Health and Human Services workgroup focused on developing the rural health workforce - Assisting with a qualitative research project to study the barriers to healthcare access in rural areas- Assisting in managing the National Advisory Committee on Rural Health and Human Services- Writing policy briefs and memos focused on rural HIV treatment and prevention challenges Show less

    • Prevention Access Campaign

      In 2016, Prevention Access Campaign (PAC) launched the “Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U)” campaign, now a health and human rights movement of over 1000 research associations, public health bodies, and HIV/AIDS organizations from over 100 countries uniting to communicate a game-changing but still widely unknown fact: people living with HIV who are on treatment and have an undetectable viral load cannot sexually transmit HIV. In other words, undetectable equals untransmittable.As the Social Justice Research Specialist, I led a mixed-methods, community-participatory research effort and wrote a comprehensive research report that will be used to advocate for fair pay and treatment when hiring people living with HIV (PLHIV).
