  Trainee Track Design Engineer

  I joined a 2 year scheme hosted by Network Rail, named 'Star Track', where I trained to become be a Track Design Engineer.My responsibilities involved assisting other Design Engineers, mainly at Colas Rail Ltd, where I was based and whom I worked with throughout the entire scheme. At Colas Rail I honed my computing skills and learned to use new software, including Bentley Microstation, Bentley Rail Track and ClearRoute. I broadened my knowledge of the rail industry to aid my continuous professional development. I was entrusted to create drawings and documents for many projects, completing them to a high standard.Once my alignment design skills had increased, projects were given to me where I completed work from the single option development stage, to the detailed design stage.During the scheme I attended Sheffield Hallam University and attained a distinction level foundation degree in Railway Engineering; I also successfully gained Technician Membership with The Institution of Civil Engineers, which was another aim of the scheme.   Responsible for producing full design packs for plain line designs through to Construction stage in line with current NR standards and working to tight deadlines.Uses Bentley Rail Track to produce alignments and Clear Route 2 to analyse gauging to prove route clearance.Produces plain line designs for Anglia, Kent and Sussex and produces packs from the Single Option Development stage through to detailed design.Produces plain line designs for High Output Renewals and produces packs for multiple sites that include both TRS and BCS renewals.Produces platform designs, with recommendations for coper movements when needed to achieve compliant platform dimensions.Liaises with senior Network Rail staff to ensure a final sign off for design packs.
