  The lubricating function of the lipid cardiolipin on the rotation of the ATP synthase mechanoenzyme was studied using fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) on supported lipid bilayers, modelling the behaviour of the protien in mitochondrial membranes.

  This project focuses on the improvement of muconic acid production in an industrial strain of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae through rational metabolic engineering using the CRISPR/Cas9 technology. Our goal is to replace the petroleum-based production of organic substances with a bio-based production.

  Fermentation technician in the R&D department of BioLyo technologies, a startup CDMO specializing in the production of live biologicals. During my period here I was mainly focused on the development of the production process of a live attenuated vaccine (Bordetella pertussis) against whooping cough. Responsibilities included:- Preparing, running and monitoring lab-scale fermentations in 96 well plates, shake flasks and benchtop bioreactors.- Preparing, running and monitoring lab scale lyophilization processes.- Analyzing online and offline fermentation and lyophilization data.- Performing cell counts and substrate assays conform quality-approved SOPs.- Reporting on experimental results and designing follow-up experiments.- Maintaining trending files.- Writing development protocols.- Presenting data for internal audiences as well as external clients.- Contributing to growing the document management system and procedural infrastructure of this startup company.   Research Associate - Fermentation

  Research associate in the Fermentation and Scale-up department of Those Vegan Cowboys, a startup company active in the food biotechnology industry. Here I was tasked with:- Preparing, running and monitoring lab-scale fermentations in shake flasks and glass and stainless steel bioreactors. I used bacteria, yeast and filamentous fungi for recombinant protein expression in batch and fed-batch fermentations, carried out between 0.5 L and 300 L scale.- Most of the fermentations were aimed at screening newly-developed microbial strains, optimizing the fermentation conditions or providing material for further downstream testing.- Analyzing online and offline fermentation and data using an Python-based visualization tool developed in-house.- Carrying out analytical work of fermentation and harvest samples by SDS-PAGE, Western Blotting and Bradford assays.- Supporting downstream processing of the harvest material by continuous centrifugation and heat and pH treatment.- Reporting on experimental results and designing follow-up experiments.- Maintaining trending files and experiment databases.- Writing experimental protocols.- Expanding and streamlining the document management workflow.- Carrying out tech-transfer work between Those Vegan Cowboys and a collaborating university.
