      Responsibilities: Tax consulting on various issues to group companies and business units within the Life Company, mainly on corporate income tax, employees tax and international tax to a limited extent.Key Performance Areas:1. Identifying areas of weakness and improvement within the business and assisting the business with creating and implementing the necessary policies. I was responsible for putting together the OMLACSA policy on the tax treatment of incentive trips. I also assisted to a limited extent in the design of the new company cell phone policy.2. Reviewing corporate income tax returns prepared by group companies3. Assisting on the SARS Payroll audit by doing legislative research for objection letters and obtaining information for submission to SARS.4. Preparing summaries of amendments to tax legislation for distribution to the business and group companies.5. In 2007 I was responsible for managing a project within the life company to put together a file of information that SARS required relating back to the 2002 tax year. This involved 4 months of work and managing time and resources within the business to do this work in addition to their own daily responsibilities. I also had to manage the relationship and expectations of the SARS auditor who requested this information. We ended up submitting all the required information timeously and did not have any queries from SARS arising out of that submission by the time I left OM.6. I was also involved with reviewing the corporate tax implications the structuring of proposed transactions, specifically involving the group’s increased dealings into Africa. This involved a lot of research on the internet regarding the tax systems of other countries, as well as liaising with independent tax consulting firms with the resources in those other countries.       Responsibility:Reconciling PAYE control accounts between Corporate & retirement funds (standalone & umbrella) contributing to the final project outcome which is to reperform annual reconciliations for SARS to reduce the corporate exposure of PAYE owing to SARS.Key Performance Areas:1. Practice management: reconciliation process design, standardization of processes, knowledge expert, skills transfer, 2. Identifying areas of weakness and improvement within the project business processes and creating and implementing the necessary project governance practice policies.3. Review of large volumes of data via a SQL database & identify patterns & trends with a view to creating matching rules to facilitate easier analysis, using SQL queries and advanced Excel (e.g. pivot tables, vlookups, if statements, etc.)4. Review & approval of reconciliations of multiple data sources – reconciliation is performed programmatically for the most part, but exceptions are reported in an excel file to work through manually.5. Tax reviews, detailed & high level, of member level reconciliations to identify tax compliance issues, with a view to disclosing to SARS and/or improving business-as-usual processes6. Liaising with relevant business stakeholders to ensure reconciliation sign-offs are co-owned by business.7.
