  Development of a suitable precursor for manufacturing carbon fibers from coal tar pitch • The objective of the project was to comprehend and analyze the trend of increasing holding temperature and rapid heating on the formation of mesophase crystals, as well as to determine the optimal conditions to produce a mesophase-rich precursor from a coal tar pitch sample obtained from the coke ovens of Tata Steel• The methodology included a feasibility study on the production of value-added chemicals and materials from byproducts of the coking process in a steel plant in order to produce metallurgical coke in an effort to promote circular economy and reduce carbon footprint• Prepared an appropriate Design of Experiment to analyze the mesophase liquid crystal content of the sample produced by varying the holding temperature and the rapid heating time to determine the best process for generating a mesophase rich sample that can be efficiently utilized to produce strong carbon fibers from coal tar pitch• Characterization of the samples produced using its properties measured by softening point in a Mettler Toledo D70, Quinoline Insoluble, Toluene Insoluble and β – Resin. Characterization was further used to determine the best conditions to produce a raw pitch sample with the highest mesophase content. Show less

  High Ash Indian Coal GasificationThe project involves the use of simulation technology ASPEN to build a fluidized bed gasifier to study the effects of various operating parameters such as temperature, pressure, oxygen content and water content on the Gasification process, the syngas product quantity, syngas composition and the effect on net and gross heating value.The project aims towards utilization of high ash coal which otherwise cannot be utilized due to high ash content which would transform into clinker in the coke ovens.The syngas produced can be used in the iron making process to convert Iron ore to steel in the blast furnace via injection of syngas as a reducing agent.
