  UBC Agape is a student-run club that hosts regular outings to socialise, befriend, and provide resources to the homeless population in VancouverAs the secretary of the club, I respond to all inquiries in a timely manner, schedule all outings and events, send reminder emails to members before volunteer shifts, prepare supplies to hand out, and lead group members safely along the set routes to initiate conversations with the homeless.

  The research project I led focused on exploring alternate production methods of wood composites to replace the use of fossil fuel-based resins. I gained experience working with a veneer-cutting machine and the TROTEC laser to produce laser-modified wood samples. Under high temperature and pressure conditions, the samples were bonded under the hot press to chemically bond (due to the presence of lignin). The shear strength of the bonded samples was tested using the INSTRON universal testing machine. In this research, I focused on exploring the optimum conditions of the laser and the hot press to result in a sample with the highest shear strength. If done on a large scale, this research has the potential to influence the wood industry and eliminate the use of fossil-fuel-based resins. Show less
