Born in Limpopo Province, South Africa, I spent my childhood and early years of teens in Mantheding, Ga-Dikgale, before I finally settled with my mother in Kgokong village (9km away from Limpopo University). I attended Mantheding Primary, Boshego and Motlakaro Secondary Schools. Post obtaining my first degree at Limpopo University, I moved to University of Cape Town where I read for BSc(Med)Hons, MSC in Medical Virology and PhD in Human Genetics with the research focused on investigating the role of epigenetics in hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In 2017, I joined the Department of Biochemistry, University of Oxford, as a postdoctoral fellow, and later in 2019 I joined Ludwig Cancer of Research in the same university. Show less

      Postdoctoral Fellow

I am a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Biochemistry, University of Oxford. My current research focus involves characterising and understanding the role of one of the DNA methyltransferase genes in X-inactivation, which is the process in which one of the female X-chromosomes is repressed in order to equalise the dosage component of x-linked genes in both male and females.

Strong association between epigenetics and oncogenic viruses that are most pertinent in our sub-Saharan African countries intriqued my interests in the filed of epigenetics and virology. As a postdoctoral fellow in the Division of Hepatology and Liver Research, I am more interested in understanding molecular epigenetic-tagged mechanisms that influence the development of oncogenesis in hepatitis B, human papillomavirus and Epstein B viruses. I believe this research will provide us with insight knowledge that will enable the identification of molecular targets that will be used for the future development of effective diagnostic tools, therapy and vaccine for these oncogenic viruses.
