      Undergraduate Designer

Managed construction phase of preliminary design of centrifugal fractionation device.Coordinated specialty work (machining, dynamic balancing, etc.) required through various companies.Designed and constructed apparatus structure, piping and supporting infrastructure required for operation.Redesigned the experimental centrifugal fractionation device (version 2) with collaboration from graduate student.

    • Canfor Pulp Limited Partnership

      Jan 2012 - Aug 2012
      Coop Student

Canfor Pulp Limited Partnership (CPLP) is the largest North American and fourth largest global producer of market NBSK pulp and is the leading producer of fully bleached, high performance Kraft Paper. My position saw me integrated in the project team during the construction phases of the three projects.

      May 2013 - Jun 2020

      • An extended experimental/theoretical study on the dewatering behavior of pulp suspensions that is built upon the understandings developed in MASc.• Redesigned pressure filtration and permeability experimental apparatus for improved performance and increased functionality. Redeveloped the pressure filtration LabVIEW program to improve feedback performance with a servohydraulic test system, introduced novel compression profiles to simulate industrial equipment and collected new material parameters (elasticity of pulp suspension), and provided an expandable architecture. • Designed/instrumented a novel apparatus for collection of shear yield stress at elevated concentrations.• Developed engineering drawings for manufactured components.• Investigated model’s suitability (from MASc) in representation of low concentration dewatering experiments, the Canadian Standard Freeness test, and for a variety of pulp suspensions. Formulated two-dimensional model framework to investigate representation of dewatering in a roll wash press nip collected at VALMET’s pilot plant. • Extended the model’s pulp network stress state description for inclusion of elasticity for improved representation of experiments at increased dewatering rates. Developed various model PDE solvers using MATLAB.• Supervised and trained multiple undergraduate research students on equipment. Show less • Studied one-dimensional dewatering of cellulose fibre suspensions to develop understanding of phenomenon to be used for design optimization of pulp and paper production equipment. • Investigated a previously posed modeling approach for its suitability in capturing the dynamics of consolidating cellulose fibre suspensions. Extended the model to capture a second scale of dewatering from the porous, hollow fibres not present in the previously posed model. • Validated modeling approaches by assessing their abilities in capturing the movement of the fibres during dynamic consolidation seen experimentally. Experimental fibre movement found with particle tracking velocimetry (PTV).• Modified MTS material testing system for experimental dewatering trials and experimental collection of suspensions compressive yield stress. Modifications included design of suspension chamber, force transducer adaptation, and LabVIEW interface for data acquisition and control.• Designed and constructed unique experimental system for collecting suspensions permeability. Constructed water flow loop, vacuum system, hydraulic circuit for compressing suspensions to varying loads, and setup system transducers, data acquisition equipment, and a LabVIEW interface for monitoring system.• Created and submitted engineering drawings to department machine shops for fabrication of components. • Supervised and trained undergraduate research students on equipment to aid in data collection.• Developed MATLAB scripts for processing and fitting permeability and compressive yield stress data to known relationships, and analyzing frames from filmed dynamic dewatering experiments to determine streamlines of fibres.
