Through implementing New York State based standards and skills into the classroom and learning them in depth, I have come to a better understanding of what is expected in the classroom both as a general educator and special educator. Research based practices are highly focused on as are activity based lesson plans that encourage student to student interaction instead of teacher led discussions. Show less

Hofstra University implements a policy of hands-on education. Prior to student teaching, all students are required to do fifty hours of participant observing. This differs from typical observations because the participant observer is required to devise and implement lesson plans alongside the cooperating teacher, teach mini-lessons and full lessons, and reflect on strengths and weaknesses. This aids in helping the student learn how to be a successful educator and reflect on their work to better themselves. Show less
