Inventory level predictions for all blood products were alarming, to say the least. Platelets were particularly challenging with their short shelf life. Maintaining the "just right" amount is always tricky, and it became even more so when our ability to collect them went into a constant state of change.Additional to the collection challenges caused by COVID-19 was the looming FDA deadline to be at 100% Single Donor Platelets (SDP) by March 2021. SDP decreases the risk of transfusion-related bacterial sepsis, so it will improve quality and customer service – and requires we ramp up our ability to collect. To ensure we are able to collect the platelets we need when we need them, the team launched an idea James Moore had been a strong proponent of well before COVID, which was made all the more relevant with the pandemic challenges. The team created a process for collecting platelet samples from whole blood donations (WBD) at our collection sites. Donors with eligible platelet levels were called to book appointments. The process included staff collecting the sample, tracking the results, and then either a supervisor, BCS staff, or Contact Center staff booking the appointment. Show less
