      May 2006 - Aug 2006
NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award Researcher

I was awarded a 16 week student research award in the summer between my second and third years of university. The project was studying the mass transfer of naphthalene from an organic phase into a liquid one, which is the rate-determining step in bioremediation of Poly-Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH). I was responsible for preparing a research plan, planning and executing experiments, collecting and interpreting data, and preparing a poster presentation on the results, which eventually became a journal article in Separation Science and Technology the following year. Jan 2007 - Dec 2007
      Chemical Engineering Co-op

I took a year off to do an internship in the middle of my third year between the first and second semesters. I was in the Technical Services division, process and mechanical engineers supporting the different plants. During the first four months I was doing process trouble-shooting in the form of lab testing on plant samples to diagnose plant upsets in the zinc dust purification circuit, which at the time remained a mystery as the problem had independently stopped occuring, however in December we managed to use the information from the lab work to solve the issue for good when new information came to light. For the next few months I was working on solving impurity level issues in the cadmium plant caused by improper cake washing, as well as issues in the indium and germanium leach process. For the last five or six months I was involved in the commissioning of a new coal feeder for the slag fuming furnace. Show less

      May 2008 - Sept 2008
      Engineering Summer Student

Profiled leaching characteristics of uranium ore core samples from a new exploration site, through metallurgical lab testing. Prepared report and presentation to management summarizing results.

      Sept 2009 - Aug 2013
      Process Engineer-in-Training

I participated in Process Flow Diagram development in potash and related potassium salts and uranium, primarily for scoping studies but also in the final engineering and execution stage of a major potash expansion project. I have done commissioning work and overseen the lockout procedures for a construction site of 500+ workers with related safety leadership and presentations to ensure compliance. I have managed a scoping study for a uranium-bearing mineral shale, preparing lab testwork plans to develop economic indicators to demonstrate the potential of the deposit. I have done significant amounts of general Process-and-Metallurgical engineering, including process design, modeling, equipment sizing and specification, etc. Show less
