I examined reactions to individuals who expressed dissatisfaction about their body in a “masculine” way (“body as an instrument”; e.g., requiring more strength to run faster) or a “feminine” way (“body as an object of others’ attention”; e.g., worry about being too heavy to be seen at the beach). Four hundred and ninety-five male and female participants recruited on Amazon’s Mechanical Turk for a “Facebook study” evaluated a Facebook profile that included body complaints as posts. The study used a 2 (Target Gender) x 2 (Sexual Orientation: heterosexual, homosexual) x 3 (Body Complaint: control, BI, BO) design. I predicted that heterosexual men would uniquely be derogated for expressing a feminine (body as an object), but not a masculine (body as instrument) complaint. Although this hypothesis was not supported by liking measures, I found a trending three-way interaction between gender, sexuality, and type of complaint on the target’s perceived masculinity and femininity. These results supported a stereotyping explanation in which perceivers are attuned to information that confirms stereotypes. Specifically, perceivers readily viewed (a) heterosexual men and lesbians as especially masculine when they made a stereotypically masculine (body as instrument) complaint and (b) heterosexual women and gay men as especially feminine when they made a stereotypically feminine (body as object) complaint. Keywords: masculinity, body dissatisfaction, gender stereotypes Show less
