      Documentation / localization

Over 10 years, I've had my fingers in almost all aspects of documentation and localization at Opera, including writing, copy-editing, and managing translators. My primary responsibility has been in the following two areas, involving regular interaction with designers, developers, and translators.1) English user interface text for all products2) Localization engineering / QAIn the design phase, it's my job to ask a lot of questions. To successfully argue with designers and developers, I have to know the products rather well. My aim is to build a consensus about the optimal user interface text, based on constructive criticism. Since the text will be translated into dozens of languages and read by millions of users, it's important to get it right.I'm the last one to touch the English text before it's sent for translation, and the first one to test the translations (via QA scripts) before they're passed on to developers. Although I work with a lot of different people, my closest co-worker has always been the localization manager. The software landscape is constantly changing, and we have to move fast to keep developers happy.Among other things, I created and maintain a search application (python, HTML) for locating English text and translations (into 90+ languages) in all of our products. This application helps us to find bugs and to ensure consistency within and across product lines. Show less

      Documentation leader

At RapidMiner, I am the sole technical writer, although I get plenty of help from developers and the Research team. The subject matter is data science, and my primary job is to manage the website. We have an older website based on jekyll and a newer website based on Docusaurus that is integrated into our cloud product.Writing documentation for RapidMiner is often quite challenging, because it covers a broad range of technical and mathematical topics. The typical reader is an engineer who lacks a background in data science and who wants to rapidly get up to speed. I enjoy the challenge and the diversity. Here are some typical tasks:- Describe any new features in the product (e.g. projects, version control with a git back end)- Introduce widely-used data science models / algorithms to new users (e.g. Decision Tree, FP-Growth)- Explain the method behind Auto Model / Go, RapidMiner's semi-automated model builder- Show how to use Docker / Kubernetes / Helm to launch the server product- Create an Algolia search index, and integrate search into the website Show less
